A Little About Us

Northway Sports & Social Club has been part of the local community since 1948. Or possibly 1946. It depends who you ask.

What we do know is that the club was built on what was, at the time, essentially a swamp at the bottom of Stoughton. Northway itself had not been finished, the road at the bottom was not there yet, and somebody apparently looked at the patch of soggy ground and thought, "That's the spot."

And, to be fair, they were right.

The club was originally created for the people of Stoughton and Westborough, with strong roots in the ex-service community and the Royal British Legion.

That connection is not just part of our history. The Royal British Legion owns the building we call home, and our relationship with the Legion remains an important part of Northway today and of securing the club's future.

Northway has grown into a wider community sports and social club, and today our doors are open to everyone. You do not need to have served in the Armed Forces, or have any military connection, to join Northway or the Royal British Legion.

We encourage all Northway members to also become members of the Royal British Legion. By joining, you are supporting the work of the Legion while also helping to strengthen the relationship that has supported Northway for generations.

 Whether you have lived locally all your life, have just moved to the area, just want somewhere to have a drink, fancy joining a team, or simply want to see what is going on, you are very welcome.

Over the decades, the area around us has changed rather a lot, and we are fairly certain the club has too. Unfortunately, this is where our historical records become... a little less comprehensive.

Dates vary. Stories vary. Memories definitely vary. We suspect there are several versions of Northway's history currently residing in the heads of people sitting around the club, and each one has their own spin on events

Rather than pretend otherwise, we have decided to embrace the mystery.

What we do know is that the reason for having the club has remained remarkably simple. It is a place for the local community to meet, have a drink, play some sport, catch up with friends and enjoy themselves.

Today, Northway is home to darts, pool, snooker and plenty more besides, alongside the social side of the club. You do not have to play a sport either. Coming in for a drink and a chat is a perfectly acceptable level of athletic commitment.

As for everything that happened between somebody deciding to build a club on a swamp in the 1940s and the Northway you see today?

We're working on that bit.

With a bit of help, we might eventually work out what happened.

We might even settle whether it was 1946 or 1948.
